A downloadable game for Windows

A mix of retro shmup (think Judgement Silversword) and breakout, in the style of something like The Lost Shield or Wizorb, with aesthetics hugely inspired by ZeroRanger (because it's brilliant, and green+orange goes well with EVERYTHING).

Eliminating priority enemies/bosses is all that's needed to progress, instead of each stage dragging on until every last stationary helpless block is vanquished. Also, there are bonus objectives in some stages.

Throwaway plot made up as a good excuse to make cool sprites:

Deep in enemy space, and all your ship's weaponry empty, you have no choice but to fight with your engine's fuel cores.

Eject your volatile fuel cores, send them speeding through space with your ship's exhaust, bounce them into enemies, and take out priority enemy targets. It's the only way to put a stop to these unprovoked invasions.

At first, I couldn't understand the game, but the music and gameplay made me stick to it. Five minutes later, I seemed to understand it. Ten minutes later, I was enlightened. About 15 minutes later, I cleared it. It was crazy. Small games can be so fun. The author's game production level is excellent, and I look forward to a better game! Finally, thank the author for bringing us this game. I can play it dozens of times!

Any chance a full-screen option could be added?

(+1)

I agree and add controller support.

¡I Love It!, Without A Doubt One Of The Best Games I Have Played In My Whole Life, Even If It Is Short, It Does Not Take Away The Fun :)

Thanks for playing, glad you had a good time :)

Yes, I Had A Lot Of Fun With The Game, It's Great And The Pixel Art Is So Good :)

Clear, but what did happened to my ship?

Lovely game. I love how the game is so small in size but rich in entertainment

This is awesome! Great job!

Be careful, Out of Ammo is already a game name :(

Yeah, I only found that out after finishing and uploading this :P

I took one of the palettes from Lospec, and made some changes myself, to arrive at this: https://imgur.com/aMjYhIx :)

Deleted 3 years ago

Yeah. I didn't stick to the palette too strictly :) E.g. before you face Thunderheart, his sprite is darkened so technically he's outside of the palette. As well as this, the background has a slight dimming effect that just draws a dark rectangle over the whole level to make the gameplay elements stand out, so during gameplay the backgrounds are all outside of the palette slightly

i didn't understanded the game. The game looks good but I didn't understanded it.

It's Breakout, but your paddle (Ship) can move vertically a bit as well, and your paddle has HP so avoid bullets shot at you. And you can hit Space to alter the ball's direction to be upwards. Main difference to normal breakout is you don't need to destroy everything to beat a level, just the Miniboss/Boss :)

Easy :) a small image of a black line plus a transparent line underneath, drawn tiled, at viewport scale and about 0.1 opacity, in the DrawGUI Event of a GUI object I always keep on the top layer

Deleted 3 years ago

I think I used a 2x2px or 4x4px image like that, just in case using a non-uniform sprite would cause any scaling issues (it would probably be fine though, GMS2's tiled drawing is good) :)

Then if you wanted to get fancy with it, give players an option for rotating the scanlines 90 degrees, since some people prefer their scanlines vertical for some reason

So this game is a marriage of two play styles that I'm not very good at, and the result was something I was not really good at but that didn't stop me from getting hooked. Really satisfying to get to the end- would definitely play something like this in future!

Thanks for trying it out :)

To be honest, I'm not very good at the genres either :D Glad you were able to get to the end though

Out of all the short games I have played recently this is one I wish would get a much bigger release. The genre mashup is done extremely well, the control feels solid, and the music choice was fantastic. My only complaint with the game is that there isn't more of it. I'll be keeping an eye on this dev.

Really cool concept, nice visuals and gameplay
Good Work!

Thanks for playing :)

(+1)

This is actually very fun! I haven't beaten it yet, but this's definitely a game I'll come back to

(+1)

Thanks for trying it out :) I was kinda hoping that people would come back to it a couple of times after first play - see if you can trigger the additional stage bonuses by doing the secret objectives in some stages :D

Great Fun , GOOD JOB 👍💪

(+1)

This is very good! I love the gameplay, art, and audio! Would love to see more from you, or even this game expanded. Keep it up! :D

This game's visuals, gameplay, and music are amazing. It's such a good concept that I wish it were longer! I also want to thank you for recommending ZeroRanger. It's the first shmup I've ever played and it's great, too.

Thanks for playing, glad you had fun :D

Yeah I can never recommend it enough. ZeroRanger and FAITH are the 2 games that made me really want to pick up hobby development again after years 'n years.# :)

As odd as this may seem this is my niche. Love it, can't wait to give it a play when I get the chance. Downloading now

Very cool little game you made man! Would you mind doing a video/post about how you nailed the game's overall theme? It feels really good.

(+1)

Could you provide a Linux version?  The game looks awesome, I do like the green/orange/black theme a lot, and makes it easier to see the action vs the scenery.

Out of curiosity, what is the framework/language you used?

I use GMS2, so it's written in GML (no additional libraries or extensions) :)

Which made everything nice and easy to make, since GML is so forgiving to non-programmers

This is a real gem. The pixel art, music and gameplay all combine beautifully. This is something I'll probably be playing for a long time. It's really bloody addictive XD. Well done.

The only critique I have (and really, this is the only critique) is that I didn't know how much health I actually had. Maybe making that apparent would make things a little better.

None the less, I love shoot-em-ups which try something different, and this is really great. Well done overall :)

(+1)

Thanks for trying it out :)

Did you trigger any of the Bonus conditions in the non-bonus stages, by any chance? If not, something to aim for next time :D

Yes, I did reach a bonus stage. Didn't get too many points there though XD. I'm going to aim for more. Well done the less :)

(+2)

Game was a lot of fun! I'm excited for future levels (if that's your plan).

I enjoyed the difficulty curve and it was an awesome take on the pin-ball-esque games.

My only criticism would be to make the HUD a little bit more distinguishable. I assumed the left was health, but was never really sure about the right.

(+1)

I was not expecting this gameplay and this very nice and punchy visual effects. Very Good surprise.

(+1)

Fun! Is there a way to launch in fullscreen?

(+2)

I really really enjoyed this game! What a blast!

(+3)

Thanks for playing :) and you found a bug at about 18:40ish I had no idea existed. It's making me realise I need to communicate mechanics and stuff much more than I do :P

(+1)

It's the curse of the creator that you'll always understand what's going on so much better than the player. Really great gameplay though!

(+2)

lovely game!! really fun variation on the arkanoid concept :)

Thanks for trying it out :)
